On Sunday the 17th of July we arrived in
Mitchell, South Dakota.
It is hot here 102* and windy
but very little humidity!
~For hundreds of miles across Minnesota and South Dakota all we saw were fields and fields of Corn and Soy Beans~ beautiful wide open country~ |
A site on the highway Interstate 90 |
We are staying in Good Sam's Park
we needed to catch up laundry and cool
down after a few days of dry
camping while on the road!
This afternoon we went to the legend Corn Palace~
It was simply awesome to listen to the history
of the prairie and how the Corn Palace originated!
This is the 2011 Corn Palace The first one was built in 1892, when the city of Mitchell was just 12 years old. |
Early settlers displayed their agricultural bounty on the buildings exterior to prove the fertility of the soil and to attract immigrant farmers to settle here. Each fall a festival was planned to celebrate agriculture and the productivity of their people. To this day, over 100 years later, the tradition of the Corn Palace Festival continues in Mitchell. "Corn-By-Number" Decorating Each year a decorating theme is chosen and the outside of the Corn Palace is stripped and redecorated with new corn and grains. Over the summer, 3,000 bushels of rye,oat heads and sour dock are tied in bundles and attached. When the crop is ready, roughly 275 thousand eats of corn are sawed in half lengthwise and nailed to the building following a pattern created by local artists.
Do you recognize these Corny Faces! It is Us! |
